How to Plan a Day (or Two) on a Rental Mountain Bike in Squamish

June 26, 2026

Squamish has hundreds of trails across two main networks, world-class terrain at every skill level, and enough riding to keep you busy for a week. If you’re renting a bike and trying to figure out how to make the most of your time here, this is the guide.

How Long Do You Actually Need?

For a proper day out, plan for 4–5 hours of riding. That gives you enough time to warm up, explore a zone properly, and not feel rushed on the descents.

One day is great. Two days is ideal.

Squamish has two main trail networks — Alice Lake and Diamond Head (Highlands) — and they ride very differently. One day at Alice Lake, one day at the Highlands gives you a complete picture of what Squamish riding is all about. Both zones have trails for every ability level, so whether you’re building confidence or hunting the gnarliest lines, you’ll find plenty to ride in each area.

If you only have one day, pick the zone that fits what you want and commit to it. Squamish trails don’t reward rushing.

Should You Rent an eMTB Even If You’re a Strong Rider?

Yes. Especially if you’re a strong rider.

This is the question we get most often and the answer surprises people. On an eMTB you’ll ride roughly three times the trails in the same amount of time. The climbs are faster and less taxing, which means you show up to every descent with more in your legs. You explore more, you ride more, and you go home having seen corners of Squamish that a full day on an acoustic bike wouldn’t get you to.

The best riders we see come through consistently have the most fun on an eMTB. More trail time, more descents, more Squamish.

If you want maximum range and power for big days in the mountains, the Marin Alpine Trail E1 or the Cube Stereo 177 are our most capable eMTBs. If you want something lighter and more playful that still gives you a boost, the Marin Rift Zone EL1 feels more like a trail bike with a motor — responsive and fun rather than overkill.

Do You Need a Guide?

You can absolutely figure it out yourself. Trailforks is your friend, the trail network is well-signposted in most areas, and plenty of riders arrive solo and have a great day.

That said, if you want to waste less time and see things you’d never find on your own, a guide is the way to go. We’ll assess your skill level and what you actually like to ride — not just your ability, but whether you’re chasing flow, slabs, technical features, or big descents — and build your day around that. We can also adjust on the fly. If a trail isn’t clicking or you want to push harder, we redirect. No guesswork, no wasted laps on trails that aren’t your thing.

Squamish has a lot of trails. A guide gets you to the right ones faster.

Where to Ride Based on What You Want

Alice Lake — flow trails, slabs, and classic Squamish singletrack. Options from beginner through expert. Dialed In Cycling is right at the base of this network — park at the shop and ride out the door.

Diamond Head / Highlands — more of everything. More loam, more descents, more trail variety, more Squamish magic. Best accessed via eMTB or the Shred Shuttle, which departs from our shop.

Not sure which zone is right for you? Ask us when you pick up your bike. We ride here every day and we’ll point you in the right direction.

FAQ

How long should I plan for a rental day in Squamish?
Plan for 4–5 hours of riding for a proper day out. Two days is ideal — one at Alice Lake and one at the Highlands — to experience both of Squamish’s main trail networks.

Should strong riders rent an eMTB in Squamish?
Absolutely. On an eMTB you’ll ride roughly three times the trails in the same amount of time, with more energy for the descents. The best riders consistently have the most fun on an eMTB in Squamish.

Can I ride from the Dialed In Cycling shop directly to the trails?
Yes. We’re located at the base of the Alice Lake trail network. Pick up your bike and ride out the door. For the Highlands, the Shred Shuttle departs from our shop.

Do I need a guide or can I figure out the trails myself?
You can navigate on your own with Trailforks. If you want to waste less time and ride the best trails for your specific style and skill level, a guide is worth it — we’ll build your day around what you actually want to ride and adjust on the fly.

What’s the difference between Alice Lake and the Highlands?
Alice Lake is Squamish’s most accessible trail network with options from beginner to expert, right at the valley floor. The Highlands offers more of everything — more loam, more descents, more trail variety. Both have trails for all levels.

How far in advance should I book a rental?
As early as possible for summer weekends — the fleet books up. Weekdays are generally more flexible.
