Squamish MTB Trail Guide: What to Ride Based on Your Skill Level

Squamish is one of the best mountain bike destinations in the world — but it comes with a warning: the trail ratings here are not what you’re used to at home.

British Columbia, and particularly the North Shore of Vancouver and Whistler Bike Park, is famous for being generous with its trail ratings. The blues in Squamish are going to be harder than the blues back home. The blacks are going to be harder than the blacks back home. Know your skill level, ride within it, and don’t be afraid to walk a feature that doesn’t feel right. No shame in it — even the locals do it.

The Two Main Trail Networks

Squamish has two extensive mountain bike networks: Alice Lake and Diamond Head.

Dialed In Cycling is located at the base of the Alice Lake trail network, so if you’re renting from us you can park at the shop and ride straight out the door. Diamond Head is a little further out — book one of our eMTBs to make the approach easier, or jump on the Shred Shuttle which picks up right at our shop.

Beginner Trails (Green)

If you’re new to mountain biking or new to Squamish, start here. These trails are forgiving, well-maintained, and a great way to build confidence before stepping up.

  • South Coast Adaptive Trail — purpose-built for accessibility and newer riders, smooth and well-graded
  • Rob’s and Cliff’s Corners — mellow flow with minimal exposure, great for getting comfortable on the bike
  • Cardrona — easy-going and fun, a solid warm-up trail

Remember: even green trails in Squamish may feel harder than what you’re used to. Take your time.

Intermediate Trails — Flow (Blue)

You’re comfortable on a bike, can brake properly, and want to start having some real fun. These trails deliver.

  • Mad Hatter — one of the most popular trails in the network for good reason. Flowy, fun, and confidence-inspiring with just enough tech to keep things interesting
  • Miki’s Magic — a local favourite for intermediate riders, great rhythm and flow throughout

Intermediate Trails — Slabs (Blue/Black)

Squamish is world-famous for its granite slab riding. If you haven’t ridden slabs before, they feel intimidating at first — the key is committing to your speed and trusting your tires. These are a must-do Squamish experience.

  • Stone Ridge — a great introduction to slab riding, manageable grade with stunning views
  • Leave of Absence — steps things up a notch, longer slab sections that reward commitment and smooth technique

Black Trails

You’re a confident, experienced rider comfortable with exposure, steeper terrain, and committing to features. Squamish blacks are the real deal.

  • Rupert — a Squamish classic, technical and sustained with the kind of riding that defines this zone
  • Pamplemousse — rowdy and fast, one of the most fun blacks in the network
  • Credit Line — demands precision and commitment, a proper black in every sense

Hard Black + Legendary Slabs

These are bucket-list trails for experienced riders. If you’re here to test yourself, this is where Squamish earns its reputation.

  • Entrails — relentless and unforgiving, not a trail to underestimate
  • Bony Elbows — technical and sustained, everything Squamish riding is known for
  • In and Out Burger — the legendary slab trail. One of the most famous mountain bike trails in BC. If you’re skilled enough to ride it, you already know about it. If you’re not sure, you’re probably not ready — and that’s okay.

And this is barely scratching the surface. Squamish has hundreds of trails across both networks with something new to discover every visit.

FAQ

Are Squamish trails harder than trails at home? Almost certainly yes. BC trail ratings — especially around Squamish, the North Shore, and Whistler — are known to be stricter than most other regions. Expect Squamish blues to ride like blacks elsewhere, and plan accordingly.

What are the two main trail networks in Squamish? Alice Lake and Diamond Head. Dialed In Cycling is located at the base of Alice Lake with direct trail access. Diamond Head is best reached by eMTB or the Shred Shuttle, which departs from our shop.

What are the best beginner trails in Squamish? South Coast Adaptive Trail, Rob’s and Cliff’s Corners, and Cardrona are the best starting points for newer riders.

What is slab riding and should I try it? Slab riding is riding on open granite rock faces — something Squamish is world-famous for. It feels intimidating but rewards commitment and smooth technique. Leave of Absence and Stone Ridge are great introductions. In and Out Burger is the legendary benchmark for advanced slab riders.

Can I rent a bike and ride straight from the shop? Yes. Dialed In Cycling is located at the base of the Alice Lake trail network. You can park at the shop, pick up your rental, and ride out directly.

What if I don’t know which trails are right for my level? Book a guided ride. Your guide will read your skill level on the trail and take you exactly where you should be — no guesswork, no riding in over your head.
