All Time, Fall Time: Why Squamish is the ultimate fall mountain bike trip

Here in Squamish, we have a saying: “All time, fall time.”

And for good reason.

Why Fall is the Best Time to Ride Squamish

As summer crowds fade and the first rains return, Squamish trails come alive with hero dirt — that perfect combination of moisture and grip that makes every corner faster, every descent more confidence-inspiring, and every ride better than the last.

Unlike clay-heavy destinations that turn to slop when it rains, Squamish’s glacial till thrives in wet conditions. The soil drains well, firms up quickly, and develops that tacky, grippy surface that locals live for. Add in some of the best trail-building in the world and you’ve got prime riding conditions from September through November.

Fall also means fewer people. Summer weekends in Squamish can get busy — parking lots fill up, trails see more traffic, and you’re sharing your lines with a lot more riders. By September that pressure eases significantly. You get the same world-class trails with a fraction of the crowd.

Cooler temperatures are the other factor. Squamish summers can be warm, and climbing in the heat takes something out of you. Fall temps are ideal for riding — cool enough to climb comfortably, warm enough that you’re not freezing on the descents.

The window is roughly mid-September through mid-November depending on the year. October is the sweet spot.

What to Ride in the Fall

Both of Squamish’s main networks — Alice Lake and Diamond Head — ride brilliantly in fall conditions. Here’s how to think about them:

Alice Lake is right at our doorstep. Park at Dialed In Cycling and ride out the door — no car shuttle required. In fall the loamy corners on trails like Mad Hatter, Miki’s Magic, and Leave of Absence are at their best. The slabs on Stone Ridge and Credit Line stay grippy even when damp, as long as you’re not riding in active rain. For a full breakdown of what to ride based on your skill level, check out our Squamish MTB Trail Guide.

Diamond Head / Highlands is where fall really shines. The loam here is legendary — deep, forgiving, and at its absolute best after the first fall rains. Half Nelson, 19th Hole, and Airplane Mode are must-rides. The Shred Shuttle picks up right from our shop and drops you at the top of Meadow of the Grizzly, deep in the Diamond Head zone. Ride singletrack all the way back to Dialed In. No car needed.

Considering an eMTB? Fall is the ideal time. You’ll cover more terrain, access bigger loops, and still have energy for the descents that matter. Here’s everything you need to know about planning an eMTB day in Squamish.

Let’s ride.

FAQ

When is the best time to mountain bike in Squamish in the fall?
Mid-September through mid-November, with October being the sweet spot. The first fall rains activate hero dirt conditions — tacky, grippy, and fast — while temperatures are ideal for riding and trail traffic is at its lowest.

Do Squamish trails get too muddy to ride in the fall?
Not typically. Squamish trails are built on glacial till that drains well and firms up quickly after rain. Unlike clay-based destinations, Squamish trails thrive in wet conditions rather than turning to slop. Riding in active heavy rain isn’t ideal, but trails recover fast.

What trails are best in Squamish in the fall?
Both Alice Lake and Diamond Head ride well in fall. Diamond Head in particular is famous for its loam — the first fall rains turn the descents there into some of the best riding in BC. Half Nelson, 19th Hole, and Airplane Mode are fall classics.

Can I rent a mountain bike in Squamish for a fall trip?
Yes. Dialed In Cycling offers full day mountain bike and eMTB rentals right at the base of the Alice Lake trail network. Book in advance for fall weekends as the fleet gets busy.

Is it worth hiring a guide for a fall Squamish trip?
If you want to make the most of your time and ride the best trails for your skill level, yes. A guide will take you to the right zones, show you lines you wouldn’t find on your own, and adjust the plan on the fly based on conditions and how you’re riding.

Where should I stay for a fall mountain biking trip to Squamish?
MTN Fun Basecamp is right next to Dialed In Cycling and the Alice Lake trailhead — hotel rooms and RV/tent sites in the forest, steps from the shop. It doesn’t get more convenient than that for a riding trip.
